My boss is great...I work every other saturday, so I get every other monday off. Three day weekends are great. Unless you have something to do that you're trying to avoid.
Well, last winter the sewer line from the bathroom off of the master bedroom froze up by about February sometime. Not a huge deal, 'cause the bathroom at the other end of the house was fine. The sewer line from the master bathroom runs suspended in the open space between our house and the ground (bet you didn't know our house hovers!), and at about 45 feet long (13.7 meters for you metric folk), it doesn't have a whole lotta slope to it. For some reason, the bums at Grandeur (just kidding Bruce ;) who built the place decided not to insulate the 3" PVC pipe. Maybe it never occurred to them that even sh*t freezes at minus 35 ;)
So anywhoos, I've been avoiding this job since spring, 'cause it requires one to slither along like a snake on your belly, or your back if you prefer, and do whatever needs doing. The smart thing to do would be to affix a heating tape to the pipe, but the Mennonite in me refused to pay over $80 plus hydro for a 40 foot heating tape. So I spent about $20 on some pipe insulation that looks like those water noodles you see at the pool. It also would have been smart to do this job in summer sometime, when it's warm, and the ground is dry. Luckily I had enough other projects to do all year, that I was able to put this one off until today. Today it was cold, and the ground under the house was rather wet. It soaked through two pair of pants and two shirts...good thing I had on a pair of long johns, and one more shirt underneath. Ha!
So anyways, we'll hope this works. It sure is a lot nicer to roll off of the bed and crawl a few feet to the toilet instead of getting up and walking 50 feet to the other washroom. At least my wife thinks so :)
